Registering the birth with your home country

You do not need a birth certificate from your country of origin to obtain a passport there. However, you do need to register your child as a citizen of that country in order to gain a passport. Your embassy will issue you with a registration of birth certificate which can then be used to apply for passports. The registration of birth certificate acts as proof of your child’s citizenship but is not a birth certificate. You must apply separately for a birth certificate from your country of origin.

The process differs depending on nationality, and below are general guidelines, but do consult your embassy for the exact requirements.

Prerequisites

  • One parent must be a citizen of the country you are applying for.
  • Birth must first be registered with the UAE Ministry of Health (within 30 days of the birth).

What to bring

NOTE: You will need to provide both originals and copies

  • Your child’s UAE birth certificate, translated into English and attested by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Both parents’ birth certificates or equivalent (e.g. naturalisation certificate or overseas birth certificate).
  • Both parents’ current passports (copies must show UAE visa page).
