Staying Safe

Visitors to Dubai have very little to worry about when it comes to safety. While some may have preconceived notions of the Middle East due to well documented issues in the region. the UAE is about as safe for foreign visitors as it gets. In fact, when it comes to being targetted by criminals, the UAE is safer than many European countries. While an Islamic country, non-Muslims are welcomed so long as they respect the culture and laws of their host country, yet tolerances are made to make visitors more welcome than they perhaps expect.

There are however some unique dangers in the emirate, mainly when you're in the water or the desert, so it pays to make sure you're away of what could happen. In the city you're unlikely to be the victim of a crime... the biggest danger you'll probably encounter is the traffic. Driving standards are poor, including those of many taxi drivers, so if you're in a car then make sure you wear your seatbelt. If you're driving, keep alert and always expect other cars to do the unexpected as they often do just that. And watch out for pedestrians too, especially in car parks where they appear to have little inclination to move for oncoming cars, if indeed they've even noticed them. Visitors going for a walk should also be extra vigilant when near roads.
