As home to the Manhattan Beach AVP Tournament, dubbed ‘The Wimbledon of Beach Volleyball’, it is no surprise that the coast is peppered with bronzed amateurs practising their sets and spikes on the area’s public beach volleyball courts. Beaches from Zuma to Huntington Beach have beach volleyball courts open to everyone, and pickup games are common. Play is on a first-come, first-serve basis, and the courts can get quite crowded in the summer. According to the courts’ rules, you can always challenge the winning team to a game, even if you are alone.

For a list of the public beach volleyball courts, consult the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors website (http://beaches.co.la.ca.us). The California Beach Volleyball Association (www.cbva.com) is also a good place to learn more about organised beach volleyball play.
