Pharmacies

Most LA pharmacies are located in ‘drug stores’ such as CVS, Walgreens or Rite-Aid, which also stock food and household items, but may prefer an independent pharmacy to these mass market chains. Either way, your pharmacy will offer over-the-counter first aid and medicine such as aspirin and mild cold and allergy relievers, as well as controlled, prescriptive medicines that are distributed by the pharmacist, such as antibiotics, strong pain killers and birth control pills. Prescriptions are provided by your doctor and can only be filled at a pharmacy. While insurance often assists with prescription costs, the exorbitant price of these drugs is a key component in the healthcare controversy. Save money by asking your pharmacy if your prescription is available in generic form. Most pharmacists are happy to discuss your prescriptions and even over-the-counter treatments.

In LA, you can find a pharmacy any time of the day. Most are open at least 12 hours on weekdays, with fewer hours on the weekend, but you are sure to have a 24 hour chain location in the neighbourhood, such as the Downtown Rite Aid (334 S Vermont Avenue) and a few CVS stores (3010 S Sepulveda Boulevard, and 13171 Mindanao Way). Call around to find one close to you, but be sure to ask about hours for the pharmacy itself, as apposed to the drug or grocery store, which may stay open longer.
