Moving Services

Finding a moving company to schlep your belongings to your new home shouldn’t be a problem. There is page after page of companies listed in the yellow pages of the phone book. Working in your favour is the weather and the many choices of reputable moving companies. If you do some research, the transition should go smoothly.

Narrow your search by asking friends and co-workers for recommendations. Next, start making calls to the companies on your list to learn about their specific fees, insurance coverage, and scope of services. Pricing for movers depends on several factors, including the amount and weight of goods to be transported, the distance between locations, whether you will need packing services, and if there are flights of stairs involved. Once you’ve narrowed your search to a few select companies, call the Department of Transportation (202 366 4000) to verify they are properly licensed. You should also enquire at the Better Business Bureau (www.bbbonline.org) to see if any complaints have been filed against the company by other consumers. When you settle on your final choice, provide a detailed and accurate inventory of items to be moved, and request that any price quotes be binding and put in writing.

You can save money by working with a moving or storage company that offers an ‘in-between option’. This flexible service doesn’t require you to handle the entire move on your own, but it’s not a full-service move either. Another option to consider if you’re on a tight budget is the ‘self-move service.’ This can save you up to half the cost of your move by having the moving company equip you with a truck, container and driver. You load and unload the belongings, and the company does the actual transporting. Moving containers can be delivered to you well in advance of moving day, thus allowing you to load up at your leisure. Many of these container services have ground-level loading where no loading ramps or excessive lifting are needed.
