Environmental Groups

Oman is fortunate to have some beautiful natural assets together with a government that is interested and active in environmental issues, always making them a high priority. There are currently three nature reserves where there is a facility for controlled tourism – the Damaniyat Islands, the Ras Al Jinz turtle reserve and the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary. You may need a permit to visit these fascinating reserves and to find out more information about them, refer to their entries in the Exploring chapter (Damaniyat Islands Nature Reserve, Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve, and Arabian Oryx Sanctuary).

In addition to the government’s efforts to promote protection of the environment, there are also several interest groups and environmental organisations in Oman. The Sultanate is a member of the International Whaling Commission, and although it is not yet a signatory to CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), it follows the guidelines laid down by CITES, such as stopping trade in endangered species.

On an everyday level, there are increasing numbers of bottle/can recycling points around Muscat. These are sponsored by various local companies, and are mainly located near shopping centres.
