This is possibly the cheapest mode of transportation and definitely the quickest way to get around – provided you survive. Riding a motorcycle in Singapore is dangerous compared to Australia, western European countries and the US. You will get no respect from car drivers. When it comes to the rules of the road, the choice is yours; you can make like the local motorcyclists and weave your way through the cars, especially when the traffic comes to a halt – which brings its own perils, or follow traffic rules and ride properly behind a car, but this would be so unexpected that you’re changes of being rear-ended are high. With over 50% of traffic fatalities involving motorcyclists, riding in Singapore requires focus, concentration and a defensive posture. But owning and maintaining a bike is temptingly cheap, it’s an exciting way to see Malaysia and there are motorbike clubs that arrange road trips all the way to Thailand.
