Train
There’s no train service in Singapore but there is an excellent underground system called the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) that covers the island. Connecting into the MRT network, there are also three short LRT (Light Rail Transport) lines, linking outlying residential areas to MRT stations, but this is more of a ‘people mover’ system than a train network.
If you are planning a holiday in Malaysia, there is a train service to Johore Bahru and Kuala Lumpur that runs daily from the Tanjong Pagar Railway station. Trains are air-conditioned with basic amenities and the night train to Kuala Lumpur offers sleeping berths. For more information contact Malayan Railway (6222 5165).
Alternatively, for the romance of five-star luxury railway travel from a bygone era, you can book a railway journey by Eastern & Oriental Express (E&O, 6392 3500) to Penang and the River Kwai in Thailand.
