Day trips

It is well worth taking a day trip out of Beirut to check out what else the country has to offer. Popular trips include Jounieh and Harissa, the Jeita Grotto and Byblos. Most trips can be booked through your hotel’s concierge, or through Nakhal & Cie.

Jeita Grotto
Located 20km north of Beirut, Jeita is home to one of the world’s most beautiful caverns, the Jeita Grotto, which was a finalist in the New7Wonders of Nature competition. These natural caves comprise two sections – a dry upper gallery that you can visit on foot, and a lower cave that you have to travel through by boat. Unfortunately, photography isn’t permitted inside the structures as it can damage the environment – so be respectful.

Baalbek
Towards the Syrian border (therefore check for any travel warnings before going) is Baalbek, home to the Heliopolis, a group of Roman temples, some of the most preserved in the country. Also, there is the Temple of Jupiter.

Byblos
This ancient city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it is one of the oldest towns in the world, dating back at least 7,000 years. The rise and fall of nearly two dozen successive civilisations make this one of the richest archaeological areas in the country. For stunning views of the city, climb to the top of the Byblos Castle remains.

Ksara
Wine has been grown in Beqaa for thousands of years and a number of vineyards are in operation today. The magnificent village of Ksara was covered by sand for centuries, and its well-preserved caves were found by chance in 1898 by Jesuit priests. It is now the refuge of the well-known Ksara Chateau, where thousands of old wines are preserved – sample a number of exquisite local wines for yourself.
