There are certain descriptions of Dubai that are frequently used: pearl of the Gulf, sleepy fishing village transformed into modern metropolis, tax-free expat haven, headquarters of luxury living, and so on. There’s more than a grain of truth in these cliches, but Dubai offers so much more.

If you’re still trying to make up your mind if Dubai is for you, then think about the sunny days, great shopping, outdoor living and tax-free salaries. Economically, you’ll probably find yourself slightly better off than back home, which is the draw for most expats. Prices have begun to climb again – especially rent – and salaries haven’t climbed as much, but it’s still affordable to live here, and if you’re careful, you can also save some money each month. The best way to make the move is to contact potential employers prior to your first visit and set up interviews and appointments to coincide with a short trip. Then head over and get a feel for the place whilst knocking a few job interviews on the head in the process.

Dubai is an expensive to live without a job, so finding the right job should be your first priority. Plus, your employer is usually the one who sponsors you and thus gets you a residence visa – you can’t live in Dubai long term without this visa. Now that Dubai will be hosting the Expo 2020, new projects are popping up all over the city, and more tourists are being tempted to visit – by the year of the Expo, Dubai hopes to host 20 million visitors annually.
