Traffic Accidents
If blame has been clearly decided and the accident is minor, the 999 dispatcher may ask you to drive yourself to the nearest Traffic Police station to fill out the necessary paperwork. The Dubai Police Information Line (800 7777) gives the numbers of police stations around the emirate.
If blame cannot be decided without police intervention, an officer will be dispatched to assess the accident and apportion blame. The officer will then give you a copy of the accident report; if it is green then the other party is at fault but if it is pink then you are to blame for the accident and you will receive a Dhs.200 fine from the attending officer. You will need to submit the accident report to the insurance company in order to process the claim, or to the garage for repairs. Keep in mind that garages rarely repair vehicles without a police report.
Stray animals are something to avoid on desert roads. If the animal hits your vehicle and causes damage or injury, the animal’s owner should pay compensation, but if you are found to have been speeding, you must compensate the animal’s owner.
Be sure to keep your licence on you at all times. If you are pulled over by the police or are involved in an accident you’ll need to show your driving licence or risk being fined Dhs.100 on the spot. You will be given a grace period in which to present your licence at the police station; if you fail to do so, you risk having your car impounded and facing a court appearance.
