Dubai's public beaches attract a whole cross-section of society, and buzz at weekends with activity. Free to use, these beaches rarely have public facilities, although JBR Beach does have great facilities. Umm Suqeim beach offers picture-perfect views of the Burj Al Arab, while Kitesurfers' Beach is perfect for sporty types.

Regulations for public beaches are quite strict. Dogs are banned and so is driving on the sand. Officially, other off-limit activities include barbecues, camping without a permit and holding large parties. Contact the Public Parks & Recreation Section (04 221 5555) for clarification. It is fine to wear swimming costumes and bikinis on the beach, as long as you keep both parts on.
