The Basics

For some, the challenge of hiking through the UAE and Oman’s mountains is not quite enough.

You’d be highly recommended to do the first (or maybe the majority) of your rock climbs with an activity organiser. The likes of Desert Rangers (desertrangers.com) arrange rock climbing trips to well-established locations, catering to everyone from absolute beginners to experienced climbers. Trips include instruction, all necessary safety equipment and lunch. All excursions depart from Dubai and a day of scaling the peaks will cost Dhs.400 per person.

Like many other outdoor sports, you can actually climb throughout the whole year, as long as you’re sensible with your summer choices. This generally means going a bit higher, which you can do in Wadi Bih and Khasab, or up on Jabal Misht and Jabal Shams – down in Oman, you’ll find temperatures may be a little lower (plenty lower at the top of the big mountains) but humidity also tends to plummet, making conditions far more pleasant for climbing.
