Atmosphere: Even with the classy and exclusive ‘Beverly Hills by the sea’ vibe of the St.Regis Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, there’s a sense of relaxation and calm in Olea for its Friday brunch. Sit outside and catch the breeze from the turquoise sea of the Arabian Gulf, while a talented jazz duo gently lulls you into yet another trip to the food stations. Staff are keen to please, keeping bubble-filled glasses topped up and suggesting signature mixes that involve all kinds of fruity twists, including lychees and passion fruit. As dusk approaches, the understated cool just melts into the fabric of this resplendent hotel, with its beach bars the perfect spot for a few sundowners

Food: Thanks to Olea’s Mediterranean bent, the brunch has a big – yet not exclusive – influence from that region, with fish dishes a star of the show. From succulent sashimi and moist California rolls, to grilled red snapper with tomato scallion salsa and pan fried salmon with fennel and cherry tomatoes, you might not even get round to the delicious paella.

The Thai station shouldn’t be overlooked though; a green curry prepared on the spot with juicy beef will have you debating whether to go back for another serving. Try the lamb chops with pan-fried potatoes or start attacking the decent dessert selection (including chocolate fountain) instead. There’s an emphasis on taste here, meaning not much in the way of chips or carb-heavy stodge to indulge in – even the pizza is a more gourmet ‘make your own’ type of deal.

Clientele: Kids are welcome, but there aren’t many running around; this is more a place for sophisticated brunchers who appreciate a great location, a catch-up over a few drinks and a taste for the finer things in life. Couples and groups of old friends and grown-up families seem to be the norm.
