Vaccinations & Registration

If living in Abu Dhabi, you must inoculate your cat or dog and register it with the Abu Dhabi Municipality, which will then microchip your pet and provide you with a plastic neck tag for them. If the municipality picks up an animal that turns out to not have a tag and microchip, it is treated as a stray and will be kept for a short time before being put down. Officially, vets should not provide any treatment for your cat or your dog if it has not been microchipped, although this may not always be the case.

Also, all dogs in the emirate have to be vaccinated against rabies, distemper, canine hepatitis, leptospirosis and parvovirus; cats have to be vaccinated against rabies, feline rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia. It's recommended that cats and dogs be kept inside, which may seem like unusual advice. However, the main threat is in picking up diseases from a stray animal; in addition, the hot summer months can also become as unbearable outside for these furry friends as it is for their owners.
