Overview

Singapore is a great place to live, offering a taste of Asia in a clean, modern and safe environment. Life here moves at a bit more of a ‘tropical’ pace than that of its neighbours Japan and China, but still offers plenty of buzz and excitement.

That may surprise you as Singapore has a reputation for being a rather boring country with too many rules and too little fun. This is a huge misconception: you can do pretty much whatever you want in Singapore. Many of the strict rules that were in place 30 years ago have been relaxed as Singapore has been transformed from a sleepy village community to a bustling international business centre. As for the things you’re not allowed to do… well, you probably shouldn’t be doing them anyway.

Singaporeans have eagerly adopted the driving commercial and business sensibilities of their early leaders and the island is now a regional business hub that offers many exciting work and travel opportunities for expats. The government continues to push economic development and there are always opportunities to get in on the latest initiative; most recently biotechnology, healthcare and tourism have jumped to the fore, while finance, marketing and the hi-tech sectors continue to be open to qualified expats.

Arriving in Singapore as an expat can be a pleasant experience. The procedures for obtaining residency are clearly explained and aimed at making Singapore attractive to highly skilled expat professionals.
