Souks

The souks are the traditional trading areas, some more formally demarcated than others. In keeping with tradition, bargaining is expected and cash gives the best leverage. Head to Al Meena for the Fruit & Vegetable Souk, Carpet Souk, Fish Souk and Iranian Souk. They are worth a visit for their bustling atmosphere, eclectic variety of goods, and the traditional way of doing business.

The modern souks, such as The Souk At Qaryat Al Beri, tend to be more like malls with high-end shops but with a nod to traditional architecture.

Searching for souks
Head out to Al Ain and you’ll find Souk Al Qaws and Souk Al Bawadi inside Bawadi Mall (bawadimall.com); the latter focusing more on traditional and heritage type items, the former being more designed for tourists. You can also visit Muwajei Souk (known as Mwaifa Souk), which is a modern souk in a long strip of shops including big guns like Choithrams, Shoe Mart and The Body Shop. There is also a bakery, a baby shop, a butcher’s and a toy shop – and even more outlets can be found across the road.
