3rd Century Earliest recorded account of Singapore.


13th Century Sang Nila Utama renames the island Singa Pura.


1819 Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of modern Singapore, establishes Singapore as a crown colony. 


1942-45 British surrender and the Japanese Occupation. 


1955 David Marshall elected first Chief Minister of Singapore.


1959 Lee Kuan Yew becomes prime minister after People's Action Party wins the general elections.


1960 Housing and Development Board set up.


1963 Federation of Malaysia formed.


1965 Singapore separates from Federation to become independent republic. 


1967 National Service commences.


1976 PAP wins every seat in parliament. 


1979 Singapore is second busiest port in the world, by tonnage.


1981 JB Jeyaretnam, Worker's Party, becomes first opposition MP.


1984 Three PAP women MPs elected; first women to serve in parliament.


1990 Goh Chok Tong sworn in as prime minister.


1993 Ong Teng Cheong becomes the first directly-elected president.


1999 Singapore experiences recession resulting from Asian financial crisis.


2001-2003 Singapore economy languishes through another recession.


2002 Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay opens.


2003 Biopolis, a major bio-medical research center, opens. 


2004 Lee Hsien Loong becomes Singapore's third prime minister.


2005 Approval given to build two casinos as part of multi-billion dollar integrated resorts. 


2006 General Elections held. PAP returned to power with 66.6% of eligible votes, winning 82 of the 84 seats in parliament.
