Walking

It’s best to keep walking outside to a minimum in the height of summer; a five minute stroll in 45°C temperatures can have you sweating like you’ve just run a marathon. In the cooler months though, walking around Abu Dhabi can be the best way to explore it, especially in the relatively compact Downtown area. Often there are good pavements, albeit with some large drops to the kerbs, but watch out for haphazard parking blocking the path, or construction areas that don’t give pedestrians many options aside from walking in the road.

Bear in mind that crossing a main road anywhere but on a marked crossing is illegal too, and there are fines for jay-walking. They often have hit squads handing those out at hotspots; 42,806 people were caught with Dhs.200 fines in 2012. Abu Dhabi’s government has invested in pedestrian subways and overpasses though, helping to make walking around the city safer. Walking along the Corniche with its retail kiosks, outdoor cafes and beach is a popular pastime and the perfect way to see an evening in.
