Madrid

Madrid is a good destination for a weekend break, with plenty to do both day and night. The top draws are the art galleries: the Prado (www.museoprado.mcu.es) is simply one of the best in the world, and the Reina Sofía (www.museoreinasofia.es), is home to many a masterpiece. The other main attractions are the Plaza Mayor and the Palacio Real (www.patrimonionacional.es) while the Bon Retiro park is also worth exploring.

Madrid is not a classically beautiful city in the manner of Barcelona, or steeped in history like other European capitals; rather its appeal lies in the way the city goes about its business. As befits a capital city, most major banks and corporations have offices in Madrid but the city is also synonymous with long lunches and even longer nights out; few cities in the world go to bed as late as Madrid. As well as business visitors, Madrid is a fixture on the budget airline circuit and so attracts a real range of guests, some for the galleries, some for the bars and restaurants, many for a bit of both. The city does get very hot in summer but generally speaking, anytime is a good time to visit. The third week of May is particularly popular as the city celebrates its Fiestas de San Isidrio. Again, until the high speed train link is established, flying may be more appealing than going by train, which typically takes five hours, for around €70 each way.
