Spreewald

The Spreewald is a forested nature reserve southeast of Berlin, shot through with a feathery network of canals and streams. Most day visitors come here to canoe, kayak, or fish; the best starting points are the towns of Lübbenau and Schlepzig, both of which offer boat rental. In Lübbenau, there is Bootsverleih Franke (03542 2722) and Bootsverleih Hannemann (03542 3647). In Schlepzig, try Bootsverleih Henschelchen, (035472 483).

There are also hiking routes through the woods, with maps available from the tourist information office in Lübbenau (03542 3668, www.luebbenau.de).

The Spreewald is home to Germany’s only indigenous ethnic minority, a dwindling Slavic group called the Sorbs. About 10,000 speakers of the Sorbian language remain, and you can glimpse street signs in Sorbian in the area around the Spreewald.

The Spreewald lies about 100km from Berlin. Regional trains run regularly from Berlin to Lübbenau, a journey of about an hour and fifteen minutes. The driving time to Lübbenau on the A13 motorway is about the same.
