Hiking

With its pleasant year-round climate and over 55,000 acres of public parkland, Los Angeles is a hiker’s paradise. The Santa Monica Mountains conveniently run directly through Los Angeles, making hiking one of the city’s most popular outdoor activities. Whether you are looking for a strenuous workout or a casual walk, the 114 public facilities throughout the city have trails suitable for all interests and skill levels. There are many parks to choose from, but Griffith Park, the city’s largest public park, remains one of the city’s most popular hiking destinations with over 53 miles of trails. There are plenty of panoramic views of downtown Los Angeles to be had. The trail from Griffith Park Observatory to Mount Hollywood in particular is not to be missed. For hikers who also love film, Malibu Creek State Park offers the chance to walk through famous movie filming locations, like Planet of the Apes and MASH. Back in Hollywood, Runyon Canyon Park offers incredible views of the city and the famed Hollywood sign, and is great for jogging, dog walking, and perhaps Los Angeles’ most popular pastime: celebrity gazing. But if you are looking for solitude on your hike, it is probably best to go as early as possible. No matter what park you choose, remember that they are all smoke free due to the dry climate and the fire hazard smoking poses. While self-directed hikes are the norm, many of the parks also sponsor group activities throughout the year.
