If you are in the US with a green card or on an H-1b visa for temporary workers, that document serves as your labour card and ID card wrapped in one, and you are ready to work in the US. If you are here already and petitioning for a work visa, you may receive a short-term work permit, or employment authorisation card (EAD), while awaiting your appointment for your final green card. Family members of an applicant for LPR are eligible to apply for this card as well. To apply, look into the requirements, which include submitting Form I-765 and a $340 fee to the USCIS.
