Birdwatching

Oman is an extremely interesting country for the birdwatcher. Because of its location at the junction of three bio-geographical areas, the keen observer can see Palaearctic and African bird species, as well as others from further east. It doesn’t require much to take yourself on a birding expedition – as long as you follow the usual rules of not heading off-road without a guide and all the necessary equipment. But to find out more about birding in Oman and what books are available, log on to birdsoman.com which is updated on regular basis.

Some tour companies offer birdwatching trips and the Muscat Diving & Adventure Centre (see details opposite) is among these. Birdwatchers in Oman are fortunate to be able to take advantage of the fact that the sultanate lies on the migration path for thousands of exotic birds doing the long haul flight between Asia and Africa.

The beaches and lagoons along the coastline are good places to spot a rich variety of marine birdlife, from storks and herons to flamingos and ducks. For a detailed introduction to the birdlife in Oman, the Birdwatching Guide to Oman (Hanne & Jens Eriksen and Panadda& Dave E. Sargeant) is invaluable. You’ll find other publications and recent photographs on birdsoman.com. You can also contact the Oman Bird Group via the Natural History Museum, and the Muscat Diving & Adventure Center (see below).

Some tour operators also offer birdwatching trips for as little as RO 30 per person.
