Singapore River

The Singapore River residential area is a long strip that runs on either side of the river from Boat Quay to Robertson Quay. It’s popular among tourists who come to ride the bumboats that fare up and down the river, or to chill at the countless restaurants and bars. The area is lively and colourful, and if you work in the central business district it’s just a short commute away. Though not typically thought of as a residential area, Singapore River does have a few major condos and more are being built.

Accommodation
Accommodation is limited to a handful of condos, including River Place, Riverside View, and Riverwalk Apartments. Rent in one of these popular developments can start as low as $2,500 for a one bedroom unit, but quickly rises to $8,000 for three bedrooms.

Shopping & Amenities
Shopping options tend to target tourists. Liang Court at Clarke Quay is a small-scale shopping mall that doesn’t hold too much of interest aside from its Kinokuniya bookstore and a Meidi-Ya Supermarket. If you prefer Cold Storage grocery stores, there’s one just a short walk from Clarke Quay at UE Shopping Mall.

Entertainment & Leisure
Living in the Singapore River area, you’re surrounded by Singapore’s most active nightlife spots. Boat Quay is home to a number of pubs and clubs that attract the after-work crowd from the financial district, while Clarke Quay has experienced a transformation over the past year or two and is now home to some of the country’s hottest clubs. Robertson Quay has a handful of trendy drinking and dining spots. Venture a bit further up-river and you’ll reach Singapore’s legendary Zouk nightclub. If partying is not your thing, you’ll be happy to know that both the Asian Civilisations Museum (Empress Place) and the Singapore History Museum are in the area.

Healthcare
While there isn’t a hospital directly in this area, a five to ten-minute drive will get you to a number of medical centres and hospitals. On the south side of the river, Singapore General Hospital is the nearest medical facility. To the north, the medical centres and hospitals in Tanglin and Orchard are close at hand.

Education
There are no schools in the Singapore River area but it’s only a short trip to the schools around Orchard and quick access to the AYE gets you out to the ISS Senior Campus, United World College and Tanglin Trust School fairly easily.

Traffic & Parking
Traffic in this area can be a bit hectic around peak periods, but it’s manageable the rest of the time. Parking can be a bit of an issue at some of the buildings on the north side of the river near Robertson Quay and Zion Road. Clarke Quay and Redhill are the two main MRT stations serving this area. Getting a taxi is generally not a problem..

Safety & Annoyances
The Singapore River area is fairly safe and free of disturbances. The only concern may be rowdy partiers emerging from the bars that line the river at its eastern end.
