Beaches

Considering Singapore is the world’s largest port for container traffic, you soon realise why it no longer has beaches of the same class as Malaysia’s east coast or Thailand. Out to sea lies a carpark of sorts for container ships. This and the fact that Singapore continues to reclaim land means that its waters are often murky. Yet the Lion City does boast some beaches, and while swimming may not be at the top of the list, it has extensive watersports options.

Sentosa has by far the best beaches in Singapore, with imported sand and palm trees, and a good range of activities. The East Coast Sea Sports Club likewise is a good place to try out laser sailing or kayaking. Further east, Changi Beach is fine for a picnic or a stroll after your fish and chips – and has spectacular views of thunderstorms out to sea. Punggol Beach holds more historic significance, as it commands a view of Johore, and the site of a World War Two massacre in which 300 Singaporeans were killed by Japanese soldiers.
