Drinking & Driving
Japan has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to drinking and driving and the police are cracking down on this. If you’re caught driving under the influence your licence will be confiscated and you may face imprisonment for up to three years, mandatory labour and a fine of up to ¥500,000. Passengers will also be held responsible, receiving a fine and possible imprisonment. If you are caught driving while intoxicated, again you will lose your licence and you can face five years imprisonment and a hefty fine of up to ¥1 million. Similarly, any passengers will be subject to large fines and the threat of imprisonment. The penalty for injuring a third party is severe.
