Benefits For Workers

If you find work with a Japanese firm, the job will most likely come with a package of standard benefits, including entitlement to Japanese public health services. This is a worthwhile perk, as it means the government will cover about 70% of medical costs (see Health on p.116). You will also have to pay into the Japanese public pension system but partial refunds of pension contributions are available to foreigners leaving Japan and you may (depending on your home country), be able to transfer your contributions to your domestic public pension – see the Social Insurance Agency website (www.sia.go.jp) or p.67 for more. Most big Japanese firms will also have a staff perks such as large biannual bonuses, private health cover, a transport allowance or company car, weekend breaks and gym membership.
