Parking

The majority of hotels in the centre of Abu Dhabi have underground parking, which is useful if you’re heading for an evening out. On the streets, it can be a little more problematic. The busy city has car parks dotted all over, but they are often full. The city-wide Mawaqif pay & display system charges between Dhs.2-3 per hour until a maximum charge of Dhs.15. Parking is generally free between 10pm and 7am, and on Fridays and official holidays. The pay machines, which are powered by inbuilt solar panels, accept coins or you can purchase a Mawaqif prepaid card or recharge one of the newly launched rechargeable cards at most nearby shops and use that. Mawaqif also offers a pay option via your mobile phone.

Should you be prepared to walk a short distance you should have no problem finding a parking space, but due to the sweltering heat, most people try to park as close to their destination as possible. Don’t be tempted to park illegally though, as the police are quick to hand out tickets which will cost you Dhs.200 each. There are specially designated parking spaces for people with disabilities in most malls and supermarkets – to use these spaces you will need to obtain a permit from the Abu Dhabi General Police Directorate.
