There are approximately 50 schools in Amsterdam that cater for children with special needs, although the process to locate just the right school for your child, depending on their needs, can be a long and drawn out one. As is the case throughout the school system, parents will have to work closely with teachers, doctors or specialists (when required) to determine the right type of school. In certain cases there may not be a special needs school in the area you live and that may impinge upon your decision as to where or how to enroll a child who has a requirement outside the norm. Categories defined as special needs are: deaf, visually impaired, physically handicapped, severely mentally handicapped and pupils with serious behavioural problems.
