Romans & Visigoths

When the Romans defeated the Carthaginians, they made a military camp of Mons Taber, today a maze of backstreets between Plaça Sant Jaume and Carrer Ample. Although overshadowed by nearby Tarracon (Tarragona), the capital of the province, the Roman city of Barcino flourished as a market town, eventually establishing its own harbour and coin mint. In the fifth century, Rome crumbled under repeated onslaughts by Barbarian tribes and Barcelona was left to the mercy of the Visigoths, who crossed over the Pyrenees from Gaul. Under Theodoric the Great, the Visigoths (West Goths) united with the Ostrogoths (East Goths) and in 511 ruled most of the peninsula, with Barcelona as their capital.
