In the early 700s the peninsula was invaded by the Moors. An Islamic dynasty, the Umayadds, took over from the Visigoths. Barcelona was occupied, but not for long enough to have absorbed any lasting impression of Moorish culture. It was liberated in 801 by Louis of Aquitaine and then used as a buffer zone to protect France.
