Castelling
Building castells, human towers, is a longstanding Catalan tradition with contests held at all major festivals. A tower is formed by team members standing on one another’s shoulders, and can reach up to ten levels high. There are three parts: the base, which provides support, the trunk, and the pom de dalt, the crown, consisting of the lightest members of the team, usually small children, the smallest of whom is called the enxaneta who must reach the top and raise their arm to signify the castle being complete. There are four classic designs: the 1/5 pillar (5 levels of a single person); the 2/7 (7 storeys of pairs); 3/8 (eight levels with three people to each); 4/6 (six levels of four). There is a healthy competitive side to these spectacles. Points are awarded for how high the castle gets, how difficult the structure is and for how smoothly the castle is constructed and deconstructed.
