Transportation

Berlin is blessed with an intricate system of trams, buses and underground (U-Bahn) and regional (S-Bahn) trains that make it possible to easily navigate the city without a car. Most expats go without a vehicle during their time in the city as taxis and car rental agencies can fill in for when you really need a car.

Petrol is extremely expensive – about €1.35 per litre or more than €5 per gallon – and parking is an inconvenience; you’ll eventually find a spot, but it can be time consuming.

That doesn’t mean Berlin doesn’t have roads – it’s covered in them – but the city refuses to time lights to make it easier to drive through town, preferring to encourage the use of alternative forms.
Most Berliners use a bike for daily chores within their district, with a good lock and safe storage space being essential. Commuters that work in the city almost universally rely on public transport.
