Utilities & Services

Utilities in Berlin are a mixture of government-run monopolies and private companies, offering consumers little or no choice. Power in Berlin is reliable with few interruptions, and the water is drinkable. All utility companies will expect you to pay your bills by transferring cash directly from your bank account, but how or who pays your water and sewerage bill depends on whether you’re renting or owning. These days, you can register for a new service online, and you’ll still be able to speak to somebody over the phone if needs be.

Because of Germany’s humid climate, opening windows can be a must, even in winter. To keep heat bills to a minimum, experts recommend throwing open several windows at once for a short period to bring in fresh air, and also prevent your furniture and stone walls from cooling excessively.
