In 1988, the authorities announced Dublin’s thousandth anniversary (counting from the year that taxes were first introduced to the city). Yet, as Dubliners raised their glasses to their home, historians were quick to remind them that Dublin – in one form or another – had been around for much longer, with its history closely interwoven with that of the whole island.
