Pantai Cherating

The beach at Cherating is one of those little-known secrets that once you find it, you are almost reluctant to share it with anyone. Located three hours west of Kuala Lumpur along the west coast of Penisular Malaysia, Cherating beach offers a massive, soft-sanded getaway for families, couples and friends. The often-vacant beach is gorgeous and the perfect place to enjoy some warm ocean water. The beach is wide and long, and therefore ideal for beach games. There is even a short surf season from November to January along the shores of Cherating, where surfers can enjoy long breaks and strong swells.

There are numerous resorts in the area including the family-friendly, entertaining Club Med (www.clubmed.com.my), but if you fancy a more tropical beach escape, try Ruby’s Resort (www.rubys-resort.com) located just yards away from the beach. Here you will find true peace and quiet in a welcoming setting.

A 10 minute walk along the beach will bring you to the Cherating Turtle Sanctuary. From May to September, you may be able to witness the endangered green turtle approach the shores to nest. Contact Malaysia’s Department of Fisheries for volunteering opportunities (www.dof.gov.my/v2).

Cherating also offers some unique natural wonders to its visitors. A short drive towards Kampang Kuantan will bring you to one of the largest firefly colonies in the world. You can go on an organised night tour or hire a boat in order to witness this inspiring natural phenomenon. A night-time dip in the ocean is a must-do experience, as your movements are lit up by the marine bioluminescence.

For a truly local experience, check out the Cherating Cultural Complex. Here you can learn about and participate in traditional Malaysian activities such as basket or mat weaving, batik painting and playing congkak, a traditional Malay board game.
