Singapore

Singapore is a wonderfully weekend getaway from KL. It is just four hours away by car, five hours by bus, or a quick 40 minute flight. Most bus companies offer frequent departure times and are surprisingly comfortable and affordable. Try Aeroline Bus (www.aeroline.com.my).

For shoppers, hit Orchard Road for mall after mall of everything you could ever need (and many things you don’t). Each mall hits a specific demographic – upscale, trendy, sports, technology, bargain. If you can stand the noise pollution and the congested pavements, you will be rewarded with an unbelievable variety and air-conditioned malls. The newly opened Vivo City (www.vivocity.com.sg), 10 minutes from Orchard Road towards the south, has become Singapore’s largest retail and lifestyle destination and is a convenient gateway to Singapore’s Sentosa resort Island. If bargain hunting and flea markets are more your thing, head to Bugis Street for your traditional Asian market experience. Stock up on souvenirs like T-shirts, accessories, handbags and CDs, and recharge with a stop at one of the many food stalls before heading on to Little India on Serangoon Road or the streets surrounding Chinatown (Pagoda Street). Both neighbourhoods offer a little of everything for discerning shoppers.

Make time to hit Singapore’s world class zoo (www.zoo.com.sg), which also boasts the world’s first night safari where you can get up close and personal with 120 different species of animal. Admission is costly but if you have a full day, you can get an adult’s pass to the zoo, night safari and the bird park for S$45 (S$22.50 for kids). Alternatively, head to Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve (www.sbwr.org.sg) where you can take one of three walking trails that will expose you to over 150 rare and exotic birds, monitor lizards and numerous tropical flora. Admission is only S$1 for adults.

There is never a shortage of activities for night owls in Singapore. The newly opened nightclub district in Clarke Quay offers an intense range of drinking options and beautiful people watching. The Esplanade theatre on the bay is an incredible audio and visual experience offering a range of performing arts.

The Asian Civilisations Museum on Armenian Street (www.acm.org.sg) is 14,000 square metres of 11 galleries that showcase various perspectives of pan-Asian cultures and civilizations. Nearby is the grand Fullerton Hotel (www.fullertonhotel.com) which offers luxurious accommodation and an exquisite Sunday brunch.

Race fans will be pleased to know that F1 is introducing its first ever night-time grand prix race in Singapore (www.singaporegp.sg) in September 2008.
