Tipping

Tips are not expected in New Zealand although they are always appreciated by hard-working staff. Some of the more upmarket restaurants and hotels may add a service charge of 10%, but usually it’s at the customer’s discretion.

The only other exception is on public holidays. Venture out to a restaurant on ANZAC or Waitangi Day, and your bill will come with a 15% surcharge. Theoretically this is to cover the extra costs of running the business. Surcharges are handled in the usual up-front Kiwi way – before your order is taken you’ll be asked if you’re aware of the extra fee.
