Rubbish Disposal & Recycling

Local authorities are responsible for rubbish disposal and recycling. They are guided, however, by a long-term government strategy, which aims to help reduce and better manage waste in New Zealand. The strategy contains 30 targets for improved waste management, waste minimisation and resource efficiency.

In the main centres, councils run kerbside recycling schemes to encourage homeowners to recycle plastics, glass, cardboard and other materials that can be re-used. In most cities you will also find resource recovery centres, at which you can drop off unwanted items for recycling. There are several regional landfills around the country, which hold waste that cannot be recycled. Check with your local council for more details on recycling schemes in your area.
