Locals claim that many caverns and underground cave systems at Waitomo are yet to be discovered. Until then enterprising folk keep devising increasingly exciting ways to explore the labyrinth of limestone and underwater rivers. Gentle subterranean strolling is allowed, but much more fun is had by floating on inner tubes, abseiling or sweeping through the inky darkness on a flying fox.
