Le Parlement votes a new law into existence and is responsible for voting on the state budget. It comprises two houses: the popularly elected Assemblée Nationale and the Sénat. There are 577 members of the Assemblée Nationale, known as deputés. They are elected to five-year terms coinciding with the president’s tenure. Sénateurs, 321 in total, are named by locally elected officials and serve for six years.
