The Current Government
Nicolas Sarkozy was elected the sixth President of the Fifth Republic in May 2007, replacing Jacques Chirac. Sarkozy appointed François Fillon as his Prime Minister and named fifteen other ministers – seven of which are women. President Sarkozy is a member of the Union for a Popular Movement Party (UMP). The UMP garnered a strong majority of votes in the Assemblée Nationale, considered a necessity if the president hopes to implement change. The party holding the second largest number of seats in the Assemblée Nationale is the Socialist Party (PS). PS Party presidential candidate Ségolène Royal was the first woman to appear on a second round presidential ballot, garnering 47% of the vote.
