Hostels
There are a growing number of clean, well-run hostels that offer budget travellers the chance to stay in the heart of Shanghai. They’re not just for young travellers or backpackers happy to camp down in dorms either; some offer private rooms for lower prices than most of the hotels, making them a good choice for couples on a budget. Most have several computers with internet access (some, such as the UCool hostel, even have Wi-Fi areas) but these are normally shared, making hostels generally unsuitable for business travellers who may need further office facilities or services such as a concierge or dry cleaners. Much emphasis is put on socialising in communal areas, meaning older travellers may find hostels too noisy for their liking. Again, with this stress on communal living, some families with small children may have certain concerns over security.
