Babysitting & Childcare

With live-in maids so common in Singapore, babysitting is not as prevalent as it is in many western countries. Still, there are a number of places you can look if you want someone to babysit for you on an ad hoc basis.

To find someone you can trust, the best approach is referrals from other parents. Live-in maids are often willing to do some babysitting on the side for about $10 per hour; officially it is illegal for them to work outside of their employer’s home but it’s a fairly common practice all the same.

If you don’t know other parents to ask for referrals, you can post a message on www.motherhood.com.sg. Social clubs are another good source. The Australian and New Zealand Association maintains a register of people available for casual babysitting work, but it’s only available to ANZA members. It’s also worth checking out the supermarket notice boards, particularly those at Cold Storage.
