Moving Services

If you know you will be staying in Singapore long-term you may want to ship your furniture and belongings over. But if you’re only here for a year it might make more sense to rent furnished accommodation, or to buy furniture here. Fortunately, appliances and furniture are reasonably priced in Singapore so starting from scratch is do-able.

You’ll find plenty of moving companies that will help you move within Singapore by packing, loading, transporting, unloading and unpacking your worldly goods. Depending on whether you’re moving overseas or down the road, you can opt for different levels of service. If all you need is a truck and some able bodies to help you carry things, you’re probably best off with a local company. Fees start at around $50 per hour for a mid-sized truck and a driver who will help with loading, but quickly rise as you add more movers and increase the size of the truck. Of course a cheaper moving arrangement does mean you’re less likely to receive compensation for any damages incurred during the move.

For an overseas move, an international moving company is a better option as its employees are better equipped to properly pack your belongings for what could be a bumpy ride. You can also place the entire move in someone else’s hands and use a relocation specialist company. In addition to looking after the packing and moving, a relocation specialist can help with arranging visas, clearing your belongings through customs and scouting out schools for your children. Service like this does come at a price, so first check whether your employer will be subsidising your move. Before the movers arrive with your goods decide how you’re going to organise your belongings so you can direct them as they carry their heavy loads in. It’s a good idea to start on the bedrooms first.
