Concerts & Live Music
Live music is huge in Tokyo and venues of every size can easily be found. Big name rock and pop acts from North America and Europe frequently sell out venues here. Tickets are far more expensive than back home, often five times what you would pay to see a foreign performer in their native land. However, local Japanese musicians can be seen for a lot less and the numerous music open-mic nights around town are another option for the budget minded. Jazz aficionados will have their work cut out for them. The Blue Note and Cotton Club (0570 030 033, www.cottonclubjapan.co.jp) are two high-end venues that host some of the biggest names in the genre. The more down-to-earth clubs such as Pit Inn and B flat (03 5563 2563, www.bflat.jp) showcase local stars and fledgling foreign jazz musicians. Barebones punk and rock clubs are hidden all over Shibuya, Kōenji and Shimokitazawa. Sufferers of claustrophobia beware as these tiny venues don’t leave much elbow room. Superstar rock and pop acts hit larger venues such as Nippon Budōkan (www.nipponbudokan.or.jp), Tokyo Dome (www.tokyo-dome.co.jp) and Saitama Super Arena (www.saitama-arena.co.jp). Expect to pay through the nose if seeing shows here, the cheapest tickets being about ¥7,000 for foreign acts.
