On The Town

Tokyo appears to cater to its every dweller, and certainly doesn’t slight the drinkers. The city of 33 million has a bar or nightclub for virtually any persuasion, and whether it’s great nightscapes, a thriving party scene or a pint of cold Guinness you’re after, you’ll find it in Tokyo.

Most bars are open six or seven days a week, from 17:00 or 18:00 until either the last train or well into the morning. Nightclubs tend to get going after midnight, which weeds out last-train-home types. Different areas of town are known for distinct traits and perhaps even a stereotypical bar patron: the hostess-chasing executives in Ginza, the foreign tourists or business people in Roppongi, tanned and wild-haired youths in Shibuya.

Special drinks deals can also be found on ‘Ladies Day,’ in places like the Tokyo Sports Café (see Sports Bars above) – the day differs from bar to bar so check in advance when to go.
