Driving School
Before getting a learner’s permit that allows you to practise on the open road (accompanied by someone with three years of Japan driving experience), you will need to pass an eye test and undergo psychological screening, spend 10 hours in a classroom, 12 hours driving on a course and pass a written exam. This is followed by 14 theory classes, 20 driving sessions and a final written test.
Koyama Driving School (www.koyama.co.jp) is a good option for foreigners as it offers full English support. It has four schools in Greater Tokyo, see the Driving Schools table opposite for contact details.
