Entry Visa
If you are intending to come to Amsterdam to stay then you will have to have applied for a work permit and a residence permit. Your employer will have to apply for the work permit on your behalf from the CWI (Centre for Work and Income) and should begin this process before you arrive. Make sure you passport is valid for longer than one year. Some foreign nationals will have to apply for a temporary entry permit Machtiging to Voorlopig Verblijf (MVV) before they leave their home country. If you do require an MVV your employer can apply on your behalf. Part of the application for the MVV requires that you take a Civic Integration exam before you leave your home country. You can apply for the exam here http://inburgeringsformulier.minbuzamail.nl/civic/en/ or with your local embassy. Before you are eligible to take the exam you will have to pay €350 to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Nationals from the EU, America, Australia, Canada, Iceland, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and the Vatican City will not need to apply for an MVV. But you will have to report to the Foreign Police (Vreemdeling Politie) within three days of arriving. If your spouse, family or partner is going to join you then you will have to complete this application form: www.ind.nl/en/Images/form_ENG_M35A_tcm6-591.pdf. The fees involved are quite steep, with the initial cost of the spousal application being €830 and €188 for each accompanying family member. Two great sources of information are the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs site (www.minbuza.nl/en/welcome/FAQsNL) and the Residence Wizard from Dutch Immigration (IND): www.ind.nl/EN/verblijfwijzer/ - forms and brochures are available in English but the site itself is in Dutch.
Citizens from the European Union, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and the Vatican City are only required to register with the Foreign Police and request a residence permit on arrival but they can begin working without this as long as they have registered with the tax office (Belastingdienst).
